Albena Denkova: We are killed of tiredness!
With Maxim we will celebratethe victory of “Bercy” in Sofia

Albena Denkova cannot complain from lack of recognition this year. After winning the first world championship for Bulgarian figure skating, she was chosen for representative of the Bulgarian Skating Federation. The new season went smoothly for the couple as well – gold medal from the Skate America Tournament in Hartford last month and first place in the tournament Eric Bomparde in Paris. We find Albena in her hotel room hours before the gala in Bersi. At this time Maxim is sleeping, tired of the difficult competition.


Congratulations for the victory!

- Thank you! This time we are quite tired. The organizers of the tournament in Paris have made too brief program for the ice dancing. As if the French federation hates very much this kind of figure skating (She laughs). For less than 24 hours we had to perform the whole program which usually takes 3 or 4 days. We finished late the original dance – we performed last in midnight. We have just finished and got home and fell asleep when we had to get up in 5 o’clock for training. After that we performed first in the competition itself. It was quite stressful.

Where is Maxim now?
He sleeps in his room. We have just got back from training for the gala. We had interview for Eurosport as well. The reporter was our good friend Gwendal Peizerat (the Olympic champion from Salt Lake City 2002)

Did he admit for whom he was onthis competition? For you or for the French couple?

Very delicate question. I haven’t asked him and he won’t answer. Marina and Guendal congratulated us after the competition. She said that she liked very much our programs.

Maxim looked very very tortured on the ice.

Maybe because he did not sleep at all before the Free Dance. This is because we did not acclimatized to the European time. I was also tired but because of the make-up you couldn’t see. From time to time at the original Dance I had the feeling that Maxim led me. I couldn’t start some steps as I do as usual. But it was only couple of seconds’ loss of focus. However, I made it after that. We couldn’t be unsatisfied with the victory in Paris. The competition was a great challenge because of the French couple Isabel and Olivier. It is not easy to beat them on French territory having in mind the fact that they are the most technical couple from our direct opponents. The audience in Bersi was supporting us. At the original dance they got on feet – they accepted the free program very well.

How do you make this trick – Maxim holds you only with a kiss in the air?

(She laughs.) The impression is tricky! Maxim is not a fakir to hold me only with a kiss for so much time.

Who made up this lift?

Difficult to remember. We added many from the elements, and our coach and choreograph Lininchuk made them look better and smooth. Sometimes she offers some elements; we adopt them to our abilities and skills. We all create on ice together. The lifts are our star number. The other couples try to imitate them. It is a pleasure for us but it makes the task much more difficult. We do not have the right to repeat something from last years because many couples do our elements in the next season. We are always obliged to make something new, original and adoptable to the rules of figure skating which are constantly changing.

Did the judges accept the highest 4th level of difficulty in all your elements?

No. We even got lower levels for two of the elements than in Skate America. We are surprised by this. But we will watch the videos to find out their reason. Maybe we have not kept the right position, or it is a gesture towards the hosts.

Did you celebrate Maxim’s birthday? On the 16th November he is 29 years old.

We still have not celebrated. We are waiting for the gala to pass tonight. We are extremely tired. Maybe in a few days there will be a party in Sofia.

Why did you play with your old costumes on the compulsory dance?

We received our new ones before the competition itself. My dress is in colour similar to the color of the skin. We were worried that we could violate the regulations. We had to consult the judges but we had no time for it. We preferred not to risk here.

When finally are you going to take Lininchuk here in Bulgaria?

We will get here but she wants a formal invitation. And Maxim told her “Now Albena is president of the Bulgarian Skating federation – I hope it is formal enough an invitation from her”. Lininchuk laughs at this argument. Actually, the problem is that she is very busy. Except us, she works with Japanese and American couples. She has individual competitors plus sport dance couples. She helps with the choreography also to the Olympic champion Kimmy Meisner USA. At 6 o’clock in the morning she starts and till tale at night she is on the ice rink.

What is your schedule these days?

- When we go back to Bulgaria I have to do a lot of work in the Federation. I have personal engagements to our sponsor Vivatel. On Friday we go to germany to participatein the annual gala on ARD television. We expect visas for Japan to train with Lininchuk and Karponosov in the time of the grand prix there. They are there because of the Japanese and American couples which they prepare. We have just a little time till the tournament in Saint Petersburg and we have to use every chance to smooth our dances. We will train for couple of days in Moscow. We have invitations for two programs there – on the Red Square and the tv show – “Stars on Ice”.

Are we going to see you at the Sportsman of the year ceremony on 21 December in Sofia?

- With pleasure we will be there no matter which place they have put us. It is clear that every sportsman has a lobby. In all cases, the evaluation we got so far from the Bulgarian media, is enormous. Every recognition can make us happy!

Yes, there is a chance there's a forum of Stars on ice, where the users post videos from the show. Let's hope someone will record it. I can do it too, just have to know where they'll skate. Because here, at my home, I don't have this channel. My parents have it, and if I know earlier that Albie and Max will skate, I'll go home.

ARD gala? I remember that one year "Eurosport" show it Maybe this year too?

That would be good, but I'm not banking on it. The gala is presented by a TV station (German ARD), so I'd be surprised if anyone else had the right to show it. But if anyone has information on Eurosport covering it, please tell us!

Of course, ARD is likely to show it, so if you can watch it there ... I searched the internet and found some information, according to which it'll be shown on ARD on 17 December, 15:55 h. I don't know where that particular page got its information from, but that's all I could find.

Marina, I have thought of a way - just making a screen shot - the quality is poor but you can get the feeling of the lift!

I remember that after the Worlds in Calgary Albena was interviewed and the reporter asked her: May I talk with Max, and she said: He sleeps in his room. And then the reporter asked: What?! You don't live in the same appartment? (it's a bit strange), and Albena answered that they need sometimes to be alone, to concentrate better and so on... So maybe that's the case. Or, as Elfaria said, Max was in the bedroom, and Albenka - in another room.
