| It's Fate that Maxim is in Bulgaria (or Maxim's Destiny is in Bulgaria or, uh... or something like that ) Here's what I get from skimming the article without my Bulgarian dictionaries on hand 1) Maxim's father's whole family are doctors 2) Maxim is very very very smart 3) Maxim had an offer to skate with a 12-year-old in Australia (maybe... ) Hopefully someone will be able to do a bit more detail than that. (It could hardly be less detail... ) | |

Yes yes, I should have said Maxim's father's whole family are doctors... except Maxim's father, who was more interested in physics and outer space/astronomy and so became an engineer. Also apparently Maxim's favourite authors include Jack London, Hemingway, Bulgakov, and Ilf & Petrov (a pair of Soviet-era satirists). Go Maxim, way to be an intellectual. If I get more time tonight, I might dig out my dictionaries and do some more "gist" translations, but no direct translations yet... my Bulgarian is sooooo bad right now, but I'm trying to relearn it. :study:

| You are all soo great!!! Thank you dear Grace for the resume you wrote. It's very interesting, I didn't knew all this about his family, but on the other hand I was sure Maxim is very smart. No doubt in that. He is funny and he shows a quallity humour. This is also something that intelligent people are usually capable off. You can also see it in the interviews (even if he jokes incredibely much.. ..so sweet) and in the way he works, determined and dedicated...also Grace, you are right, Albena probably wouldn't have accepted otherwise. I bet his parents and grandparents are very proud of Maxim. They have so many reasons to be... many, many reasons!! | |

- Dear girls, I have been reading the interview again , and I noticed that Max's father says that the russian reporters are always making people remember that he was born in a town Rostov na Don...well not in Moscow...and he implies that the russians are jealous of his present achievments and they stress this fact!!! That he was not born in Moscow I don't understand That town is in russia, isn't it?That's strange!!!!
Actually, I think those two things (pride in Maxim being from Rostov na Don and jealousy that he no longer represents Russia) are two completely separate topics. You can see in the translation that there are "headings" over some paragraphs, and there is a separate one for Rostov na Don and then another one for "jealousy in Russia" or something. Definitely in the original article they are clearly separate topics. I have a question though, because I'm always interested in other countries' education systems. How impressive is it that Maxim finished high school at 15? I mean, to an American or Canadian that sounds VERY impressive, because we don't finish high school until we're 17/18, so to graduate at 15 would mean you were finishing at least two years early. But I know in Europe sometimes you finish school at 16, so finishing at 15 would still be impressive, but not quite the "Wow, Child Genius!" impressive it is in North America. Also, what does it really mean to finish school with a medal? It seems very important, because I've known other people from Eastern Europe who talk about it like it's very important, whereas here you might graduate from high school ranked very high in your class or something, but it's definitely not anything you'd bring up in conversation 13 years later. Sorry for all the questions.
