Bulgaria welcomed World Skating Champions, Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski, who brought the nation's first gold medals on the ice.
Over 70 people, relatives, friends and fans, gathered at Sofia airport to give a hearty welcome to Albena and Maxim.
You made history in that sport for Bulgaria, Vessela Lecheva, chair of Bulgaria's Sports Agency said at the airport.
Albena and Maxim expressed their gratitude to Bulgaria's President Parvanov, Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev. We are really happy to bring joy to us and to all figure skating fans. The whole fight was definitely worth it, Albena pointed out.
The champs modestly said that they are still not used to the title, underlining that they were really surprised by the victory.
Our dreams came true with the world title, I have to say that it was a chimera for us, we were afraid to dream of it, Albena added.
The world champions are still not sure whether they are to give up skating. I don't know, we will have to take a good rest and seriously think it over, Albena Denkov said. We know that it would be very hard for us to compete over the next year, her partner Maxim added.
Partners since 1996, the ice dancers of Bulgaria own all of their country's medals at worlds and European championships. They received the silver medal at the 2004 World championships in Germany and took bronze at the 2003 championships in Washington, US.
Last Friday they added gold after fabulous performance in Calgary, Canada."
